EASTER EGGSTRAVAGANZA
On Easter Saturday the Worthys played an all age, all weather game involving parents, friends, family and a few South Wonston Swift allies in sun, rain and hail and concluding as the final whistle blew with a mini snowstorm. It was close to resembling football in its purest ancient form, with 48 players on the pitch – the only thing lacking in authenticity being the absence of a pig’s bladder for a ball. There was some interesting footwear too, with two of the more senior players in Wellington boots, lending new significance to the phrase ‘give it some welly’.
Refereed by U10’s coach Tim Beanland, the “Bibs” team got ahead with a great start after tough midfield play by U9’s Jonty Doyle, John White and U15’s Josh Court. U9’s coach Tom Andrew-Power was a fast winger and the first goal was put away by Ryan of the Swifts U9s. 8 year old Cameron Speirs threatened with a long range curler for the “non-Bibs” that skimmed the top corner of the bar, but a further goal went in for the “Bibs”, knocked in at close range by Nick Beanland of the Worthys Ull’s after some deft footwork by the poor 9 year old ‘keeper, Sam Morgan’s own father James.
The “non-Bibs” countered with U15’s coach and club Chairman Andy Court, a rock at centre half. A period of tough and exhausting - at least for the mums - end to end play followed, and the “non-Bibs” eventually, managed a goal, scored by another of the South Wonston contingent. Some fierce competitive play ensued, not least by Chika Akpobire, mother of U9’s striker Kel. In a period of mayhem, dad Chip Bains, fresh from a knee operation, got a cheeky knock-in for the “non- Bibs”. He only touched the ball once in the whole game.
The winning goal never came, the match ending in a deserved draw. It was a great event, a repeat of the Christmas Eve community match, and surely the start of a holiday tradition in Kings Worthy.
