Bishops Waltham B u-15’s 4-3 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Worthys travelled to play a friendly against Bishop’s Waltham u-15’s at Hoe Road on a fine but windy Thursday evening. With a strong wind blowing across & down the slope it made conditions difficult. On 10 mins BW scored, aided by the wind when a shot curled into Worthys top left hand corner. Olly M caused trouble down the right hand side a couple of times and Ben had a shot saved which was on target.HT 0-1.

In the second half the wind died down and the football got better with Worthys competing more for the ball. On 47 seconds George hit the bar and the follow up was missed. However, 30 seconds later Olly M slotted home on the right to equalize. 1-1.Worthys were pressurizing and had many chances, however they conceded twice in a minute. On 10 mins a crazy mix up resulted in a BW player slotting into an empty net.1-2. 29/03/08 Andover New Street u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Andover New Street u-16’s 0-1 Worthys YFC u-16

After some pre match confusion Worthys took on cup finalists Andover NS on Saturday 29/03/08. With a strong wind blowing straight across the pitch Worthys started brightly. They created good play through the middle and used the wide men, Fred W and Olly M, to great effect. GK Aaron B had very little to do in the opening minutes as most of the play was in the New Street half. Simon K had a shot from long range but it went wide but showed good technique in keeping the ball down. Mid way through the half Ash N found Russ N wide on the right wing and he put in a dangerous cross where Steve W hit the ball firmly but blasted over. Worthys wobbled towards half time as Andover NS pressured their visitors but had no clear cut shots on goal. Going into the break Worthys were much on top, but couldn't find the finishing touch and both sides went in goal less.

Half Time – Andover New Street u-16’s 0-0 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Worthys, with a slight advantage of the wind, started the second half as they started the opening 20 minutes of the first; at a quicker pace and higher tempo than the hosts. Worthys hit Andover NS with dangerous crosses from both wings. Aaron B had very little to do, but was tested early on with a low driven shot. Centre Backs Tom A and Joe I looked calm on the ball and won important headers throughout the game. 10 minutes into the half Worthys won a couple of corners on the left. The second of which Simon K hit a dangerous ball into the front post where Steve W flicked on for Dan R to head into an empty net, 0-1. Worthys maintained their push for another goal as Olly M struggled to convert from a Steve W cross. With the final whistle blowing Worthys, who were in command for long periods of the game, left Andover with all three points. They have now been lifted off the bottom of the table; the first time since the end of October 07. Dan was named M.O.M with his important goal.
For the last game of the season, and possibly the last game for some of this group of WorthysYFC lads, Richard A thanked all the players for their efforts throughout the season.
On behalf of the players we would like to thank Richard, Chris and Craig for their help and effort for the years they have been with the players.

15/03/08 Braishfield u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Braishfield u-16’s 2-1 Worthys YFC u-16

After last weeks winning performance against Lyndhurst Worthys travelled to Braishfield where Manager Richard A had to shuffle his formation with Ben injured & Joe absent. George returned to the subs bench after a four game absence. Worthys started poorly with some players trying to adjust to new positions. Despite going downhill Worthys lost the ball too many times when in possession in the first period and conceded goals on 11mins and 21mins to send the home side in at the break 2-0 up. Worthys did have some good play and a few shots on and off target, plus a decent shout for a penalty that wasn’t given.

Half Time – Braishfield u-16’s 2-0 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Worthys upped the ante in the second half becoming more fluent in their passing and movement added with a little more aggression and desire. A change in formation to a 4-4-2 seemed to fire up the Worthys who competed much better. Keeper Aaron B had much less to do than in recent weeks but in attack there was little cutting edge in front of goal. Eventually on 31 mins Steve crossed from the right; Worthys had players in the box and the ball went over the line, seemingly an own goal off the Braishfield keeper. Steve took the credit however for his 5th league goal of the season.2-1 to Braishfield. Roared on by the Worthys subs and management they tried their best to get an equalizer but it was not to be. A disappointing result for the Worthys. Richard A reminded them that this was the second successive week where the Worthys had won the second half-something they had not done all season before the Lyndhurst game. However, a very poor first half performance told in the end.James was made man of the match.

08/03/08 Lyndhurst Juniors u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Lyndhurst Juniors u-16’s 0-4 Worthys YFC u-16

After last weeks good performance against Fordingbridge Worthys travelled to the New Forest where they took on struggling Lyndhurst. Manager Richard A went into the game with the new formation which in previous games has been a success. Worthys started the brighter of the two sides as they created good early play which had their opponents on the back foot from the start. On 8mins Ben R found a way through the Lyndhurst defence as he made a great run forward and finished well with a powerful drive into the bottom corner, 1-0. It didn't take long for Worthys to extend their lead. On 28mins Ash N hit a high ball into the area where the Lyndhurst defence failed to deal with the ball and Olly M found the rebound and slotted home, 2-0 to Worthys. Lyndhurst found it difficult to create any chances of their own up against a strong looking Worthys defence who stood up well to their opponents. With 5mins of the half remaining Worthys Olly M made an excellent run into the box where he was brought down by a dangerous tackle and a penalty was awarded. Regular place kicker Steve W stepped up to the spot but blasted wide. With the break approaching Worthys went into the half time period clearly on top.

Half Time – Lyndhurst Juniors u-16’s 0-2 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Richard A was happy with his side’s first half performance but reminded the lads of their poor 2nd half performances in previous games. Worthys gave him an immediate positive response as they carried on their first half performance by creating chances and looking comfortable in possession. Lyndhurst gave their visitors a scare as one of their midfielders hit a powerful shot towards the Worthys goal. He was denied by a fine diving save from Worthys GK Aaron B. Worthys went further ahead on 6mins on the half when Olly M hit a low hard cross into the box. With the ball bouncing awkwardly Steve W managed to beat the keeper from close range with accurate finish, 3-0. Worthys maintained their good play with the centre backs Joe I and Tom A both having good games. The visitors pressed forward with impressive midfield performances from Ash N, Simon K and Ash W. On 36mins Worthys were awarded another penalty after Ben R was hauled down .This time Olly M stepped up but he blasted the ball wide. Manager Richard A muttered “penalty kick practice needed at training next week! “. Worthys finished off the game one minute from time as left winger Fred W slotted home with a skilful finish, 4-0 to Worthys. As the final whistle went there was relief all round from all the team as Worthys u-16’s picked up their first league win of the season. Fred W was named man of the match with a great performance on the left and for netting Worthys fourth.
Richard A was ecstatic on the way home, with his side picking up all 3 points. Well Done!

01/03/08 Worthys U-16’s vs. Fordingbridge U-16’s

Worthys YFC u-16’s 0-1 Fordingbridge U-16’s

Worthys welcomed 4th place Fordingbridge to Eversley Park. Manager Richard A made some tactical changes before the game. It took immediate effect as Worthys made a bright start to the game, creating some good early play. However Fordingbridge matched Worthys with some good play of their own. Aaron B made an important save midway through the half but the warning signs were there as Fordingbridge looked strong from set pieces. However Worthys attackers, Ben R & Dan R, gave the Fordingbridge defence some tricky times during the 1st period.

Half Time - Worthys YFC 0-0 Fordingbridge U-16’s

Thankfully, the 2nd half had a bit more buzz, leading to Worthys having the best play of the game straight after the break. Olly M & Ben R had chances to put the hosts ahead. But the visitors looked very good going forward and caused trouble to the Worthys back four. Russell N played a vital role in many of Worthys attacking moves, creating a good understanding down the left with Fred W. With the scores level, going into the last 5 minutes, surely the hosts would not concede a last gasp goal as they have done on 7 previous occasions this season. But as the clock reached 38 and half minutes Fordingbridge attacked down the left. They crossed the ball into the penalty area where an unmarked man firmly struck the ball into the Worthys net leaving GK Aaron B no chance. Worthys again failed to halt late goals against them and the visitors took all 3 points. Ash W was named man of the match for a fighting performance at centre back.

Worthys fell further behind on 2mins.0-3.They then proceeded to play a bit better but conceded again on 31 & 4mins to lose 0-5.It was a useful run out & well played to BW who play the game in the right way, by passing & moving. Ben was made Man of the Match for his constant running.

16/02/08 Phoenix u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Phoenix u-16’s 2-2 Worthys YFC u-16

On the back of last weeks impressive performance against the league leaders, Worthys travelled to Bachelors Barn Road in Andover to take on mid table Phoenix. The last meeting between the two sides ended in a one sided affair. Due to Half Term both sides could only field 11 players. Phoenix had a great opportunity in the opening seconds of the game, but a fantastic Aaron B save denied an early goal. After that Worthys were the better of the two sides, keeping possession better in a scrappy game. With the slope behind, Worthys forced an early break through on 22 mins. Ben R made a run towards goal and was brought down just inside the box. A penalty was awarded, and a caution for the Phoenix centre back who was lucky to escape a straight red, being the last man. Steve W stepped up confidently and placed the ball to the left of the keeper, 1-0.Two minutes later Worthys increased their lead as Russell N’s clever pass to team mate Fred W, who calmly lobbed the Phoenix keeper from just outside the box, 2-0. Worthys sat back on their two goal lead and were punished on 36 mins as Josh C brought down their right winger inside the box. Aaron B was beaten to his right by a low shot from the Phoenix player, 2-1. With half time approaching Worthys had a good opportunity to increase their lead, but Ash N narrowly hit wide.

Half Time – Phoenix u-16’s 1-2 Worthys YFC u-16’s

With the slope Phoenix came at Worthys more during the early stages of the second half with most of the play in the visitors half. Good defending from Josh C, Ash W, Tom A, and Steve W & GK Aaron B halted most of the Phoenix attacks. Mid way through the half Phoenix lost a player to a nasty leg injury. Worthys had some chances at the other end and on 25mins Ben R made another great run through on goal and again was brought down from behind. The trip came from the same Phoenix player as in the first half & he was sent off for 2 yellow card offences. For the 5th time this season, Worthys failed to see the game out & conceded  an equalizing goal from 9 man Phoenix in the 4th minute of injury time.2-2.Worthys were gutted to leave the game with just a point and not all 3, but overall a good performance from the 11 Worthys players who came along. Steve W was awarded man of the match for a good game at left back and a good penalty kick.

09/02/08 Worthys U-16’s vs. Southampton Arms Sports U-16’s

Worthys YFC u-16’s 1-2 Southampton Arms Sports U-16’s

Worthys welcomed high flying SAS to a glorious Saturday morning at Eversley Park. Richard A went into the game with a different formation; it looked to have paid off early as Worthys clearly surprised their opponents with some good football. Worthys dominated much of the first half. SAS failed to reply, as midfielders Ash N, Ash W, Simon K & Olly M all worked hard in the midfield area. On 29 mins Worthys were awarded a penalty for a push in the box. Steve W slotted home with a calm shot to the left of the keeper.1-0.Worthys were able to keep the ball and played the best football they have played all season. SAS soon got frustrated as they became much more physical; this helped the Worthys as SAS started to make careless mistakes. Russ N soon found a way through the SAS defence and hit the upright with a powerful drive towards goal. SAS had a good chance just before the break, but where denied by a sliding Josh C tackle.

Half Time - Worthys YFC 1-0 Southampton Arms Sports U-16’s

Worthys maintained their first half performance as SAS were largely out played by the Worthys. The home side were put under a little more pressure during the early period of the first half, but kept SAS at bay with great defending from GK Aaron B and the back four. SAS slowly worked their way into the game and started looking like a team at the top. The second half was much quieter until the last 10 minutes of play. Ash N failed to head Worthys further ahead with a free header from a Simon K corner. The turn of the match happened on 38 mins as a SAS clearance split the Worthys centre backs and led to their striker lobbing Aaron B from 16 yards out for an equaliser.1-1. Worthys were on the back foot for much of the remaining play and deep into injury time they failed to clear a goal mouth scramble on three occasions. This led to the ball ending up in the back of the Worthys net with the last kick of the game.1-2.
Worthys, who for 70 minutes, were clearly the better of the two sides. But luck was on the visitor’s side as they stole the three points. No disgrace to any Worthys player as today was clearly the best performance they have had if not this year but in the past two years. Aaron B was awarded Man of the Match for some great saves, but credit to every single player for their performance.

02/02/08 Worthys U-16’s vs. South Wonston U-16’s

Worthys YFC u-16’s 0-5 South Wonston U-16’s

For their first home game of 2008 Worthys welcomed local rivals South Wonston Swifts to Eversley Park and were soon 3 down after 11 minutes due to some poor defending. Worthys re grouped and held on until half time trying to create some chances against a Swifts side who were always first to the ball.

Half Time - Worthys YFC 0-3 South Wonston

Worthys conceded a fourth on 9 mins & a fifth on 22 mins. Overall a poor effort by the Worthys who usually are “up” for a game against their local rivals & class mates in many cases. Ben was made man of the match for his selfless running and Josh stood out at right back for a determined effort.

#26/01/08 Upper Clatford u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Upper Clatford u-16’s 5-0 Worthys YFC u-16

Worthys travelled to Upper Clatford on Saturday on a bright sunny morning. On a narrow and small pitch Worthys made a bad start to the game as they found themselves one down on 5mins.1-0. Things got worse for Richard A's men as Clatford doubled their lead on 8mins.2-0.The home side played some good neat football and scored further on 20mins.3-0. Steve W had a chance mid way through the first half as he carried the ball down the left, but couldn't find the finishing touch. Worthys were finding keeping hold of the ball difficult, and soon went down to fourth goal on 32mins.4-0.

Half Time – Upper Clatford u-16’s 4-0 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Worthys started the second half with a bit more enthusiasm and energy (must have been the bananas & Jaffa cakes!). They defended better, but still couldn’t get enough of the ball against a well organized home side. Simon K, Ash N & Steve W tried to pull their team up as all 13 Worthys players who made the trip put in a much improved second half performance. Richard A constantly made changes throughout the half in an attempt to find a goal scoring opening. Each time he was telling the substitute it was still 0-0 in the second half. Clatford almost went five up with 10 mins left as Tom A's clearance deflected off the up right. Worthys best move of the game came soon after as Olly M, Fred W & Steve W linked up well, but Steve W blasted wide. Clatford finished the game with a 5th goal 2 mins from time as Worthys pushed forward for a consolation goal. 5-0.
Ash N was named Man of the match for his efforts in central midfield. Overall though a disappointing performance from the Worthys who need to start positively & mentally alert for their next game.

19/01/08 Milton Lilbourne u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Milton Lilbourne u-16’s 3-2 Worthys YFC u-16

For the first game of 2008 Worthys travelled to Wiltshire to play Milton Lilbourne where there was a wet and muddy but playable pitch. The visitors made a good start as Manager Richard A went into the game with a 4-5-1 formation. Lilbourne struggled to burst the Worthys defence as Tom A & Joe I lead by example. Olly M, Ash N and Ben R all had chances to put the visitors ahead. However on 27mins a strong Lilbourne attack found a way through. First half Worthys GK George M parried a shot onto the bar but a Lilbourne forward slammed in the rebound.1-0.With a strong wind behind them Lilbourne increased their lead on 33mins with a powerful cross shot.2-0. Worthys deservedly pulled a goal back with the last touch of the first half as Ben R converted the ball over the line from a Dan R in swinging free kick from the right hand side.2-1.Dan had a great game at left back and this was Worthys first away goal of the season.

Half Time - Milton Lilbourne u-16’s 2-1 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Worthys made a bright start to the second half, as Simon K, Ben R & Ash N dominated the midfield area. Lilbourne struggled to convert any chances as strong defending and good keeping from Worthys second half GK Steve W kept them at bay. At the other end, Fred W & George M kept the pressure on the Lilbourne defence.A spirited Worthys effort saw Olly M blast home on 24mins with a powerful low shot to level the score at 2-2.Worthys kept possession well and were going all out for a first league win. However, in the last two minutes Lilbourne attacked down the right hand side and from a short cross their midfielder calmly headed the ball into the bottom corner.3-2. Worthys who left the game with nothing, but much can be taken from the performance, Tom A was named man of the match for his leadership in the back four. Even excellent Referee Dave Pound agreed that a draw would have been a fair result.

15/12/07 Worthys U-16’s vs. Braishfield U-16’s

Worthys YFC u-16’s 0-3 Braishfield U-16’s

Worthys welcomed Braishfield on a bitter morning to Eversley Park on Saturday 15th Dec 2007. Worthys started the better of the two sides; creating chances through the 3 front men; Aaron B, Abdul R and Russell N. However Braishfield supplied the early wake up call on 4mins as their striker hit a powerful shot into the corner which left keeper Ash V no chance. Worthys kept battling away, but against a physical opponent they found it difficult. Manager Richard A brought on Josh C; pushing Simon K into midfield alongside the superb Ash N. Braishfield soon went two ahead on 32mins as Ash V was beaten at the near post by a fierce shot from the right side of the box.

Half Time - Worthys YFC 0-2 Braishfield

Worthys made a positive start to the second half, where they had half a dozen chances to score through Ben R, Steve W, Ash N and Simon K. The home side kept working hard against a tough opponent, but could not find the consolation goal they deserved. Ash N hit a powerful shot on goal, but the Braishfield keeper made a great save to deny him. Simon K came close twice, just missing the post & Aaron B scooped just over the bar. Worthys were much on top throughout the second half, but Braishfield closed the game off with a third goal on 16mins from a long range shot. Josh C deservedly was awarded man of the match for his excellent game as substitute right back. Worthys first half performance cost them the chance of that elusive first win, but they fought hard in the second half.

NB: Ash Vanclay made his last appearance for WorthysYFC on Saturday. At the end of the month he returns to Melbourne, Australia. 01/12/07 Worthys U-16’s vs. Upper Clatford U-16’s-League Cup

Worthys YFC u-16’s 0-4 Upper Clatford U-16’s

Having had a tight drawn league match a few weeks before Worthys YFC Manager Richard A went with a bold 4-3-3 formation designed to cause high flying U.Clatford problems. Some good interplay from both sides saw a few chances. Worthys were playing with a much higher tempo than in previous weeks and much of their play was good to watch. The Worthys defence was eventually broken down on 20mins after losing possession on the half way line. The ball found its way into the Worthys goal from the right-hand side.

Half Time - Worthys YFC 0-1 Upper Clatford

Worthys were very much still in it at half time and were sent out with the aim of taking your chances if and when they came. A chance came on just 2mins with a sweet pass breaking the Clatford defence but their keeper smothered the attempt on goal. As often happens in football Worthys immediately conceded on 3mins to make it 0-2 to Clatford. Worthy YFC substitutes came on to try to improve the number of chances; all boys gave great effort chasing the ball ,keen to get back in the cup tie and maybe force extra time. However, Worthys conceded again on 17mins and 24mins.In between there was a one on one in the Clatford goal area but the chance was not taken. Simon was made man of the match, particularly for a storming second half display. Good luck to Upper Clatford in the next round.

Worthys YFC u-16’s 4-4 Bishop’s Waltham B U-15’s

There was a goal fest at the Worthys as we welcomed Bishop’s Waltham B u-15’s to Eversley Park for a friendly. Both sides took advantage of a “free” weekend to get some match practice before up coming cup games (League Cup and Hants Cup).Worthys took the lead on 13mins when Olly M bundled in from close range following a corner. BW equalized on 23mins with a neat passing move. Then on 36mins Worthys were under pressure in defence which resulted in an own goal, 2-1 to BW. Worthys Manager, Richard A sent on Russell N who promptly scored with his first touch.

Half Time - Worthys YFC u-16’s 2-2 Bishop’s Waltham B U-15’s

Worthys fell behind again on 4mins when BW scored to make it 3-2 to the visitors. Worthys changed their personnel with trialists Holden T & James Gib getting a run out. The game became more competitive as the 2nd half went on. Worthys pressure resulted in Simon K powering in another equalizer on 17mins from the edge of the box to make it 3-3. However, Worthys defensive frailties resurfaced on 29mins when BW scored the best goal of the game cutting in from the left and scoring with a beautiful curling shot past Worthys GK Aaron B.4-3 to BW with 10mins left. The home side kept battling away and on 35mins Worthys Man of the Match Olly M poked home his second of the match to make the final score 4-4.A good workout for both sides who like to get the ball down and pass it around.

10/11/07 Worthys U-16’s vs. Andover New Street U-16’s

Worthys YFC u-16’s 0-1 Andover New Street u-16’s

Worthys welcomed Andover New Street to Eversley Park on Saturday. Having failed to win a league game this season, Worthys had a perfect opportunity to get all three points. With the entire squad to pick from Manager Richard A had many options available. The home side started well, creating chances through great attacking play. During the first half new signing Abdul made his first appearance for the side, and he made an immediate impact as Worthys pushed forward once again. Ash N had a great opportunity to put the home side ahead but just hit wide. Worthys maintained their pressure and Aaron B had not a lot to do in the Worthys goal. Going into half time Worthys were much on top.

Half Time - Worthys FC 0-0 Andover New Street

New Street started much better early in the second half, and created some chances of their own. Olly M, who made his first appearance after injury, and Ben R both came close to scoring. But 22 minutes into the second half, New Street took the lead as their striker managed to lob Aaron from 30 yards to put his side ahead. Worthys became nervous as a much needed win was snatched away them. The home side struggled to create any pattern of play and found it difficult to create any further chances. New Street slowed things down as they put 11 men behind the ball for the last 10 minutes or so. The new Street management said Worthys deserved to get something out of the game, but ultimately were left with no points from a hard game. Aaron B was the man of the match as he made some important saves during the second half.

03/11/07 Fordingbridge u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Fordingbridge u-16’s 2-0 Worthys YFC u-16

Worthys travelled to the other side of the New Forest to take on Fordingbridge. Worthys have been struggling of late, and have conceded 12 goals in the last 3 games but were boosted by having 14 players available. On a wide pitch, Worthys started the better of the two sides. The visitors created a few chances; Ash N struck the ball 20 yards out which went just wide & George headed over following a great right wing cut back from Ben. Late on in the first half (on 29 mins) Worthys failed to clear the ball played across the six yard area and Dan R unfortunately slotted the ball into his own net.

Half Time - Fordingbridge u-16’s 1-0 Worthys YFC u-16’s

the visitors had most of the possession in the early part of the second half, and were playing the ball around nicely. Ben R, Fred W and George M all had chances to equalize for the Worthys. Things got worse on 18mins as Fordingbridge made the move of the game where a firm cross from the left was calmly headed back across keeper Aaron B in the Worthys goal and the hosts went 2-0 up. Worthys kept battering and could have had a penalty late on as Russell N was crushed by the Fordingbridge keeper after Ash N played him through one on one. To the surprise of many on & off the pitch, including some Fordingbridge players, no penalty was given. Dan R had a shot from 30 yards out but failed to hit the target. The last 20 minutes were scrappy with little goalmouth action and the home side closed out for a 2-0 win. Tom A was the Worthys Man of the Match for a commanding performance in defence.

The holiday season deprived Worthys of several players as they welcomed Lyndhurst to Eversley Park. Worthys started the better of the two sides in the opening 20 minutes and created several chances to go ahead. Ash N had the best chance but blasted the ball wide of goal following a corner. Worthys maintained the pressure on the visitors and were easily the better side in the first half. Russ N and Steve W created chances, along with Aaron B, but could not find the finishing touch. Lyndhurst struggled to create chances as Worthys kept most of the possession in the first 40 minutes.

Half Time - Worthys FC 0-0 Lyndhurst

Worthys went into the second half with confidence after the first half performance and they kept the visitors on the back foot. On 7mins Aaron B put the home side ahead with an accurate finish into the bottom corner. Worthys kept creating chances, with Russ N having a one on one with the GK. Unfortunately Worthys stepped down a gear, allowing Lyndhurst to work their way back into the game. On 23mins the Lyndhurst Manager’s son lobbed GK Ash V from 25 yards to equalise. As the first goal went in, Worthys feared for the worst, and to the delight of the Lyndhurst players they managed to score two goals in a short space of time (27 & 28 mins) to take the 3 points. Worthys were unlucky to lose the game, but sloppy play led to conceding all three goals. The man of the match went to Russell who had an excellent game in midfield.

21/10/07 Worthys U-16’s vs. Phoenix U-16’s

Worthys YFC u-16’s 0-4 Phoenix u-16’s

Worthys who were unbeaten at home before Saturday, welcomed bottom of the league Phoenix to Eversley Park, but bottom of the league was no reflection of what was to come. Worthys started well in the opening 10 minutes as they created good play through both wingers, Russell N and Steve W. On 16mins Worthys were slack in defence as Phoenix were gifted a goal early on with a simple tap in. Worthys had chances at the other end as Ben R, Fred W and Ash N all had chances to put the home side level. Worthys welcomed back Simon K after a long absence due to injury and he replaced Josh on 28 mins. But it wasn't long after that on 33mins Phoenix increased their lead, as their striker slotted the ball into the bottom corner, which left Aaron B no chance.

Half Time - Worthys FC 0-2 Phoenix FC

After the break, Richard A's men improved as they created chances to score, but could not find the finishing touch. Phoenix took advantage of slack defensive play by Worthys on 17mins as they scored a 3rd goal to knock the game on its head as a contest. Worthys kept hopes alive as Simon K came close from a free kick just outside the box, which clipped the bar. Manager Richard A rang the changes trying to find a creative combination to beat the offside trap. Ash V went into goal which gave Aaron B a chance to provide a consolation goal for the home side when he went up front in a 3 man attack. But things got worse as Phoenix went 4 ahead late on with a pulled back cross which was rammed home on 36 mins. The Worthys man of the match went to Ash N, for his efforts in centre midfield. Phoenix deserved the win on a day where Worthys gave a disappointing performance against a fairly average opponent.

Having lost Ollie M to injury the day before, Richard A's men were stretched by a powerful Southampton Arms team. Worthys were put under a lot of pressure early on as SAS came close on a number of occasions, but were denied by some fine saves by keeper Aaron B. SAS soon went ahead on 18 mins as their striker slotted the ball firmly into the corner after a good passing move. Worthys struggled to create chances as they were outdone by all round good play .SAS then scored two consecutive goals in quick succession; on 32mins following a long punt up field and again on 36mins with a clinical finish. Worthys had one half chance in the half, but struggled to create any more. Skipper Tom A, and Joe I, did well in central defence to keep SAS to only 3 goals in the first half.

Aaron B went off with an injury mid way through the second half, but replacement GK Ash V made a couple of good saves. On 29 mins SAS increased their lead to 5, as fitness played a role. Worthys fought hard with a couple of late corners but their only real chance was when Ash N firmly hit the ball just over the cross bar. However, SAS were too good for the visitors on the day. Freddie W won man of the match, on a day where Worthys were outclassed by strong opponents.

06/10/07 Worthys U-16’s vs. Upper Clatford U-16’s
Worthys YFC u-16’s 2-2 Upper Clatford u-16’s

Worthys were again unfortunate to concede a last minute equalising goal as they fought out a good and entertaining draw against Upper Clatford. Worthys welcomed the previously unbeaten high flyers to Eversley Park on a bright Saturday morning. With a full squad available, apart from recent appendix patient Simon, boss Richard A had a tough job picking his starting 11. The visitors started the better of the two sides as they created many chances to go ahead, but Worthys at the other end created chances as well through Aaron B, Ollie M and Steve W. Upper Clatford went 1 ahead on 19mins with a smart passing move which found it’s way through a strong Worthys defence & left Ash V no chance. Soon after though on 32 mins Worthys equalized through in-form Ben R, who took on 2 Clatford players and calmly slotted the ball into the top corner following a powerful run from midfield.

Half Time - Worthys FC 1-1 Upper Clatford FC

Upper Clatford made things hard for Worthys early in the second half and soon hit the woodwork and had further chances to score. A stunning one handed save by Ash V, and great defence from the back four managed to keep the visitors out. Then on 22mins Worthys were awarded a free kick 35 yards from goal and Steve W slotted the ball in the top corner to stun their opponents. For the last 5 minutes Worthys were hanging on to their 1 goal lead, but then with a minute left a Clatford player crossed the ball from the right side of the box and found a player at the far post who slotted home to grab his team a point. A good performance from Worthys and the man of the match was awarded to Joe I for his defending.

29/09/07 Bishops Waltham B u-15’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Bishops Waltham B u-15’s 0-2 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Worthys travelled to play a friendly against Bishop’s Waltham u-15’s on a fine Priory Park pitch wet with overnight rain. BW, although a year younger proved to be a stiff opponent for the Worthys u-16’s who only had 11 players available. Manager, Richard A had to shuffle his pack and chose to play several boys in unfamiliar positions. Nevertheless they responded well and competed in all areas against a well drilled BW team who, like Worthys, like to get the ball down and pass it around. After a bright start BW came back into the game with a couple of set plays being cleared by the Worthys defence.Worthys took the lead on 31 mins when a Russell high free kick just inside BW’s half flew straight into the net. Whether the keeper was put off by Ash N’s attempt to head the ball on was not known. HT 1-0.

BW came at Worthys with more attacking intentions in the second half and had much of the play, making use of their available subs. But Worthys weathered the storm well with man of the match Russell impressive in a right back slot. Then, to the relief of the Worthys management, on 29mins Ben ran onto a through ball; he stayed strong to slot in across the BW keepers right hand side into the corner of the net.
Great credit to the 11 Worthys players who stayed focused and committed against a younger but very able opposition. A special mention for Tom who was outstanding, particularly in the first half when all 4 other members of the back 5 were not playing in their usual positions.

22/09/07 South Wonston Swifts u-16’s vs. Worthys u-16’s

Swifts u-16’s 3-0 Worthys YFC u-16’s

On the back of last weeks 1-1 draw against Milton Lilbourne, Worthys traveled to South Wonston and were tested by a strong looking Swifts. Worthys struggled to create many chances and were put under a lot of pressure by a tall, strong Swifts attack. Worthys conceded on 4 minutes as a Swifts player got behind their defence and slotted home with a decent header. Worthys battled well but had no answer as the Swifts defence could not be broken. Tom and Simon stuck to their task well at the back, but then on 29 minutes, the ball struck Ash N on the hand in the box and a penalty was given. Worthys protested as it seemed a harsh decision, and Swifts duly increased the lead with a firm strike. HT 2-0.

Worthys made a better start to the second half, and tested the Swifts defence more. Both full backs, Ash W and Joe did well to keep the Swifts wingers quiet for most of the game. Swifts kept up the pressure on the visitors but were denied on a number of occasions by goalkeeper Aaron. On 14minutes Swifts were awarded their 2nd penalty of the game, as Aaron rushed out of his goal appearing to gather the ball cleanly but in doing so connected with a Swifts forward. Again, the decision seemed harsh but Swifts took advantage and put themselves 3 ahead. Worthys made subs throughout the game and Josh competed well up front. The visitor’s best chance was when Russell crossed the ball and found James who hit the woodwork. Joe was awarded man of the match as he played well at left back. A below par performance from Worthys was not enough to stop an impressive looking Swifts.

15/09/07 Worthys U-16’s vs. Milton Lilbourne U-16’s

Worthys YFC u-16’s 1-1 Milton Lilbourne

Worthys were desperately unfortunate to concede a looping headed equalising goal with literally the last kick of the game following an entertaining well fought out encounter at Eversley Park. For their first league game of the 07/08 season Worthys gave a debut to Aaron in goal who pulled off a number of excellent saves throughout the match. Going with a 4-4-2 formation Worthys were under pressure from the start but weathered the storm well with Tom making one crucial interception to deny Milton’s Fred. On 36 minutes Worthys took the lead against the run of play when a Dan corner found its way to the back post where Olly rifled it home across the keeper.1-0 to Worthys at half time.

The second half saw Worthys try to assert their passing game on Milton. Chances were few and far but Worthys could have wrapped it up twice late on in the second half. Deep into the final moments of the game Milton won a corner from which they scored. There was not even time to re start the game as the Referee’s whistle blew for full time. A mention for great performances by Aaron and Olly, but it was Ben who was a deserved man of the match.

01/09/07 Down Grange U-16’s vs. Worthys U-16’s

Down Grange u-16’s 3-1 Worthys YFC u-16’s

Worthys travelled to Basingstoke to play Peter Houseman Youth League side Down Grange in a second pre-season friendly. In an evenly fought contest Worthys fell behind after losing the ball in midfield. The pacy Down Grange forward was able to slot the ball in the corner of Ash V’s net on 14mins for the first goal. Worthys responded very well with Ben shooting wide and George troubling the DG defenders at all times. Olly was behind most of Worthys good play in another excellent performance in midfield. However, on 35 mins a strong challenge on skipper Tom forced the central defender to leave the field with a rib injury. Guest player Johnny came into midfield with Ash N slotting in at centre back. For a few moments Worthys were re adjusting and unfortunately conceded a telling second goal. A DG corner was not cleared and the ball fell to one of the DG substitutes on the edge of the box who picked his spot to score well. Half Time 0-2

Worthys took the game to DG in the second half and were rewarded with a goal on 10mins when Olly tip toed round a defender and goalkeeper to slot into an empty net. Guest player Marc came on for a tiring Steve who had given his all. On 15mins DG’s quality shone through when a sweet passing move from back to front resulted in a bullet like shot from 25 yards finding its way pass the Worthys keeper to make the score 1-3. Worthys thought they had scored a second when Johnny coolly slotted home a sweet move with a right foot shot but unfortunately it was adjudged offside. George replaced Ash V in goal who had to come off with a nasty knee gash.
Worthys were a credit to themselves and to the Management team who look forward to a few players returning from holiday to push for starting places. A mention for great performances by Joe and Simon, but it was Olly once again was a deserved man of the match.

A word too for a very good performance from Referee John McDermott.

Steve calmly stroked the ball into the far corner from the spot.

Half time - Alresford Town YFC 0-3 Worthys YFC

Worthys were put under pressure during most of the second half as fitness played a key role on a humid day. Worthys created several chances through Dan, Olly & Ben but were halted by good defending from Alresford. The home side created many chances in the second half and scored from a counter attack with 10 minutes left. The Worthys defence kept battling, especially central defenders Simon and Skipper Tom. Ash W had a good game at right back also. Worthys made an impressive start to the season with a top performance, which made the Manager proud.
