10/10/09 Simply Soccer Muskateers 4-1 H

A great all round performance from The Team led to a fairly comfortable third win of the season. Worthys showed good Team Work from the start of the match with both Loughlan Stephenson and Charlie Blaxland getting heavily involved early on however it was Simply Soccer who had the best two chances of the first ten minutes only to be denied by two great saves from Worthys Man of The Match, Louis Miller. Louis continues to gain confidence in his new found position. As the first half went on, Worthys began to control the match and it was following a great move involving Loughlan who beat three Muskateer players with a jinky run before finding Harry Snellgrove that the Worthys took the lead as Harry calmly planted the ball past the Goalkeeper. Harry celebrated with his now Trade Mark soaring bird impersonation. The score at half time was 1-nil to the Worthys thanks in no part to some excellent defensive work by Darcy Farwell who was ably assisted by Luka Kesic. The second half was not that old when Ollie Marshall cooly finished off after the Muskateers goalkeeper had made an instinctive save from Harry. Not long after the restart it was three - nil as Charlie Blaxland cleverly finished after the
Muskateers goalkeeper had made another save from a long range Worthys shot. Worthys continued to dominate and made it four-nil less than 10 minutes it to the second half as Ollie showed great skill it taking the ball past two defenders
before slotting the ball past the hapless Simply Soccer Goalie. Ollie was so close to the Man of The Match award but did get a Special Star for his great performance. With less than five minutes of the match remaining a weak goal kick fell straight to an unmarked Muskateer's player as Worthys makeshift defence went missing; this resulted in a well taken goal to make the final score 4-1. No blame can be
attributed to the Worthys makeshift defence as at the time of the opposition's goal we had our two best defenders enjoying a well earnt rest. Well done to all the Team for such a solid performance including Lucas who was
competitive as ever when he came on and  Marcus who played his first league match. In the second match we went one - nil down playing with the hill in the first half but had several chances to equalise with Darcy ,playing in midfield, providing some great passes into Danny who found some good space in the opposition's penalty area only to see his shots either saved well or go just wide. In defence Tom and Rowan showed great commitment and energy to get to the ball first whilst Georgia lead by example with some good tackles. In the second half as the Worthys started to boss the game a well deserved equaliser was not long in coming as Danny calmly passed the ball into the Muskateers net - not bad considering he was suffering from a high temperature all morning. The ball into Danny for the goal was equisitly played by Ollie. The match ended in what I believe was a fair 1-1 scoreline.

03/10/09 CK Andover H 0-1

The Worthys Under 9's this week learnt that there is no justice in football as we went down 1- nil to CK Andover after dominating the game for long periods. Whilst it was disappointing to lose, the double diamond system which we have plagiarised from Shooters worked really well with Loughlan Stephenson in particular settling into his new role with ease and as a result fully deserving his man of the match award. Darcy Farwell also impressed with his boundless energy and strong tackling in the heart of defence whilst Lucas Lyne showed great spirit in his mazy runs. The best chance of the first half came when Loughlan Stephenson hit a powerful shot from outside the area, only to be denied by a fantastic save from the opposition keeper who parried the ball out to within inches of Harry Snellgrove who bravely went in for the rebound attempting to steer the ball into the net but ended up sandwiched between the CK Andover Keeper and a Defender who managed to clear the ball out of the danger zone. In the second half we had shots cleared off the line and both Ollie and Loughlan had shots that forced excellent saves from the CK Andover Keeper. Harry went inches wide with a trade mark free kick which the Keeper would have had no chance of saving. With the Worthys pressing for a deserved winning goal we were caught on the counter and as a result of weak tackling and players being found out of position, CK dealt the killer blow with only minutes remaining. Whilst we pushed hard to the end we could not find the elusive goal and went down, beaten but knowing we had played the better football. I am sure on another day we would have run out easy winners. In the second game we went one nil up in the first half thanks to a joint shot by Loughlan and Harry with neither knowing who actually got the final touch but what counted was the fact we had at last beaten the CK Andover goalkeeper. Tom McCullagh put in a strong performance in defence as did Georgia Allen whilst Katie Little made good space upfront and had several good dribbles. Unfortunately for the Worthys we conceded a goal in the second half and as the game ebbed and flowed either side could have won but all in all a 1-1 draw was a fair result. Special mention must go to Max Doyle who paid attention to making stronger tackles and closing down in the second match.

26/09/09 Shooters H 0-11 Worthys came up against what will be the strongest side they will play all season and maybe for the rest of their Junior Football career. Shooters are well organised, skilful and highly advanced in terms of footballing brains for their age. Having said how good the opposition were, credit must be given to Reuben Moignard-Clark who had a very good game in goal which ensured the Shooters score did not get even higher !! Praise should also be given to the fact that although we lost the first half 7-0 we fought back, losing the second half by a smaller margin four -nil which proves how hard our Team battled and this was largely due to the tenacious Charlie who was our Man of The Match. Shooters scored quality goals at regular intervals and found space in front of goal too easily with the Worthys defenders all too often losing their man. The Worthys midfielders also struggled to cope with The Shooters Double Diamond (did work wonders) formation. Positives to come out of this defeat were that we always tried to play football with some good passing moves and battled hard throughout however we must learn to be focused on the match in hand if we
are to put up better performances against sides of this quality. In the second game we were also on the receiving end of a defeat with Shooters continuing in the same fine form as the first match. A good performance in goal by Louis Miler during the first half saw Shooters leading by the solitary goal however the flood gates truly opened in the second half with Shooters running away with the match. Players who should be congratulated for their performance are Darcy Farwell who showed good energy and strong tackling all day even though he did lose concentrate which lead to an easy Shooters goal. I am sure Darcy will not play the ball across his box again !! This aside well done on two good performances. Danny Maddiford played some good passes throughout and got back to help his defence well on many occasions whilst Tom McCullagh showed some good strength in tackling. Overall we will need to concentrate harder for future matches, learn to close down quicker and keep our shape by focusing on our positions. We had a true football lesson against Shooters from which I am sure we will learn a lot.

19/09/09 Whitchurch H 2-2

A fantastic sunny day saw an equally fantastic match of football. After reflecting on the game for most of Saturday I can honestly say that I think a draw was a fair result. We could have been 1 nil down within two minutes but for a great goal line save by Louis Miller and a two minute discussion between players, referee, parents and coaches as to whether a powerful Whitchurch shot had crossed the line!! I think this situation will undoubtedly speed up the process of goal line technology. The first halve was fairly evenly contested however Whitchurch did apply more of the pressure and it was as a result of this that lead to the first goal when the Worthy's defence backed off too far and let a Whitchurch player run from nearly the halfway line to the edge of our penalty area before letting go an unstoppable shot past the hapless Louis Miller. Worthys best chance came from a slick move involving Harry Snellgrove on the left wing who put in a lovely cross to Loughlan Stephenson who hit a great first time shot only to be thwarted by an amazing one handed diving save by the opposition goalkeeper. Worthys started the second half with a one goal deficit however kicking downhill we were confident that this would be corrected and it soon was. Two minutes into the second half a through ball found Harry unmarked in the Whitchurch penalty area and he took no time in blasting the ball into the back of the net. It was not long after our equaliser that we scored our second. A Whitchurch player raised his hands, resulting in a free kick just outside the opposition penalty area. Up stepped Harry to unleash what can only be described as a thunderbolt into the right hand corner of the Whitchurch goal - 2-1 to Worthys. Once we went ahead we seemed to invite Whitchurch onto us with the outstanding Louis making save after save however with less than a minute to go our stout defence crumbled and a Whitchurch forward was allowed to go into our penalty area unchallenged which resulted in the inevitable equaliser for them. Although Louis picked up the more than deserved MOM Award mentions should also go to Ollie who played a good amount of the game with a mouth injury, Charlie who battled for the Team all match both in defence as required and attack, Max who gave another solid performance, Harry for his two goals and to Darcy for a good League Debut. Special thanks also go to Phillip for refereeing again and to Sasa for running the line. In the second match against the same opposition our luck run out slightly with Whitchurch winning 5-0 however I feel this scoreline flattered them. Louis was quite clearly tired after his heroics in the first match and had a couple of momentary lapses of concentration which resulted in shots he was saving with ease in the first game slipping through into the net but he can be forgiven for this as without him in the first encounter we might have had a similar result. Players who deserve a mention for their hard work include Marcus Helen who put in a very strong performance for the Team, Danny Maddaford who had a couple of good scoring chances, Darcy who was as energetic as ever and Rowan who closed the opposition down time after time in resolute defence.

 12/09/09

Shipton Bellinger Rams

 H

 9-1

What a fantastic start to our first League campaign.
Whilst it was a great result, the manner in which we played pleased me equally. I was delighted to see our hatrick heroes Ollie and Harry link up so well upfront which brought back memories of Cottee and Mcevienne to a life long West Ham fan. Elsewhere on the pitch there was a strong defensive performance from our captain Luka who was ably assisted by Rowan. Reuben in goal put in a good solid performance in between picking daisys from the goalmouth!! In midfield alongside Ollie,we had Charlie running his heart out as always which produced its rewards with two well taken goals; other good performances in midfield came from Lucas, Loughlan and Max who scored what was probably the most spectacular goal of the game with a right foot curling shoot from the left hand side of the opposition penalty area. If I am to be over critical, it is important that our midfielders concentrate on their positional play which includes helping the defence as well as the attack!! All said and done what a fantastic result but lets not get carried away as we will undoubtedly meet tougher opposition as the season progresses. In the second match I was extremely pleased that we came back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 - a great performance all round. Individuals who impressed included Danny who scored two goals on his Worthys debut and Marcus who also scored on debut. The team was captained by Georgie who played well in defence with Darcy who as ever was extremely energetic - I must admit I enjoyed Darcy's private battle with Harry who was playing for the opposition. Others who did well were Katie upfront with several chances to score on numerous runs in behind the opposition's defence and Louis who played his first match in goal - watch out Reuben. Tom also had a good game playing in an unfamiliar role in midfield. Well done to all the Team for the spirit showed in turning a deficit into a victory.
